Putting your child in public school is

…child abuse.  [Glenn Reynolds]

Glenn Reynolds, the Instapundit, frequently runs articles that make dramatic points on companion issues:  the higher education bubble and K-12 education bubble.

With respect to the higher ed bubble, he highlights the complete and utter stupidity of goings on in the university system like stupid class offerings, free speech codes, outrageous actions by professors and administrators, etc.

As for K-12, it’s similar but probably the most frequently referenced issue is that of “zero tolerance” rules, sometimes referred to as “zero tolerance, zero intelligence” rules.  Those include things like the boy who chewed his pop tart into the shape of a gun and was suspended from school.

Today’s example tops that one by a wide margin.

A 3 year-old deaf boy in Lincoln, Nebraska is being bullied by public school officials to change his name because the hand sign for Hunter Spanjer looks like a weapon. The Grand Island school district has a policy that forbids kids bringing to school “any instrument … that looks like a weapon.” They can’t change the sign, because it’s the official hand sign for his name, registered through S.E.E., Sign Exact English.

Pressure from the National Association of the Deaf and the public has compelled the district into allowing the deaf boy to keep his name. Sadly, there is no humility or sense of shame from district authorities.

Here’s the sign, from the S.E.E. dictionary

SEE Hunt

If I was Hunter’s father I would have a sign for the school administrators.  Since this is a family site, I’ll have to leave that one to your imagination.

Thanks to my lovely wife for pointing this article out to me. I couldn’t get through a day without her.
