Meet Gabriel Gomez GOP Nominee for US Senate
On April 30th a special election primary was held in Massachusetts for the US Senate seat vacated by John Kerry. The Massachusetts special election is set for June 25th. The Democrats have nominated 18-term Congressman Ed Markey who was first elected to office the same year as Jimmy Carter. His Republican opponent, Gabriel Gomez is a former Navy SEAL Commander and a successful businessman.
The win came as a surprise because he defeated in the primary State Rep. Dan Winslow and former US Attorney Michael Sullivan. Gabriel Gomez is the outsider novice running for this US Senate seat against a career politician. Before reading what I and others say about Gabriel Gomez, let’s consider what he says about himself.
When you run for office, political people, they immediately try to hang labels on you. They ask you … are you a conservative? Are you a liberal? Are you a moderate? Well, my response is this: No. I’m a Navy man. I am a businessman. I am a father. I am a husband. I am an American.
I’m Catholic and by faith I’m pro-life. I’m not going down to D.C. to change the law.
I’m against any kind of discrimination, by race, gender, social status, sexual orientation. I think that if two people fall in love, they should be able to get married.
On a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the country, Gabriel Gomez told reporters
It can’t be an easy path, it also can’t be an impossible path. At the same time…border security needs to go hand in hand with a potential path to citizenship. Illegal immigrants with criminal records should be deported and the country should increase legal immigration.
GOMEZ PRIMARY ELECTION NIGHT REMARKS
Gracias a todos por estar aqui conmigo esta noche.
Just a few moments ago I received calls from Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Winslow. I congratulated them on a spirited campaign, and they both pledged their support.
I’d like to apologize in advance for not having the time to thank everyone individually.
I do want to point out 5 people very quickly, these are the people who have made it possible for me to run for the Senate. My wife Sarah, my kids, Olivia, Zander, Antonia, and Mad Max. Thank you all for bearing with me and for your incredible support.
I want to thank one other group of people tonight without whom I could not have won – we have had such tremendous support from military veterans across the Commonwealth. I’m humbled to have their support, as well as the unwavering support from many of my Navy SEAL buddies across the country. I hope to make them proud because I couldn’t be prouder than to be one of their brothers.
I’ll be brief here tonight; I just have a few things to say. First, let me take you back in time for a moment….
The year was 1976. 37 years ago. Gerald Ford was President. The internet did not yet exist. 8 track players were big. Boston’s first album had just come out. The first Rocky movie debuted in theaters. The median price of new homes was 44 thousand dollars. Our national debt, which today is over 16 Trillion, was not even 1 Trillion. Al Gore had not yet invented the internet. It was a lifetime ago… I was playing little league baseball. …it was when Ed Markey first got elected to Congress.
Einstein famously said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Congress has enough politicians. If we keep sending politicians to Washington we will keep getting the same results.
If you are looking for a rigid partisan, I’m not your guy
If you are looking for a person who will take orders from party leaders, I’m not your guy
If you are looking for someone who refuses to work with the other party, I’m not your guy
If you are looking for someone who will participate in driving our national debt higher, I’m not your guy
If you are looking for an experienced slick talking politician, I’m DEFINITELY not your guy.
if you are looking for a person that will reach across party lines…I’d be honored to have your support.
If you are looking for a person who will put principle ahead of politics…join our campaign.
If you are looking for a person who believes we can turn this country around and grow our economy…it’s go time.
If you are looking for a person who believes congress should not get paid if they can’t pass a budget…come join with us
If you believe we need term limits for politicians…come on board.
If you are looking for an independent voice, a completely new kind of Republican, take a look at our campaign. I’d be honored to have your support
Let me close with this.
My parents emigrated from Colombia, the year before I was born. They came in hot pursuit of freedom and the American Dream, and they caught it.
I was raised in a typical middle class family in a small town. My folks told me that in America, you can do what you put your mind to.
I have been tremendously blessed. From a kid who didn’t know English until he went to school, I’ve earned everything in my life: From earning my Navy Pilot Wings, to earning my Navy SEAL trident, to earning my way to Harvard Business School and earning a successful career in the private sector.
This election is about the future and not about the past.
But the simple truth is this – I’m running because I’m concerned that the dream my parents came here for will not be available to my kids, and your kids. And that’s why it’s time that we the people take matters into our own hands.
I need to say one more thing, I want to take a minute to express my appreciation for all those brave Americans who put their lives on the line to defend our freedom. From the police officers, to the firefighters, to the intelligence community, to the FBI, and countless others…they work hard and they don’t ask for much. And to our men and women in uniform …these are the people who make it possible for you and me to enjoy our freedoms…these are the people who allow us to live free….these are the people who know that freedom isn’t free. I will do my all to represent them in the United States Senate.
I will approach this job with a military man’s discipline, a father’s sensitivity and a businessman’s experience.
I look forward to meeting you on the trail, I will earn each vote and I will always fight for you.
Thank you and may God Bless you all.
Muchas Gracias a todos y que dios vaya contigo.
Now for a little more background information, and what others have said about Gabriel Gomez:
He was a spokesman for Special Operations OPSEC Education Team, a group of former members of the military and intelligence services that released a video accusing Obama of jeopardizing national security by releasing sensitive intelligence information relating to the killing of Osama bin Laden. Gomez criticized Obama for taking too much credit for himself and not giving enough to the troops.
Barbara Wipf, a friend of Gomez’s, serves with him on the board of the Cohasset Youth Baseball and Softball Association, and had this to say
When I first heard he was running my jaw dropped. He’s just a good, normal guy.
Craig Coffey, a running partner and close friend of Gomez’s, said
Gomez is intelligent, a loyal friend, and someone with integrity. He reads history books, and has a keen interest in foreign affairs, due to his time in the Navy.
Don’t expect Gabriel Gomez to be supported by James Dobson, Tony Perkins, and Tom Tancredo. He is also naive in the same way that Rush Limbaugh recently described Marco Rubio
He’s willing to give liberals a much bigger benefit of the doubt than I would, based on my experiences with ’em.
Let’s acknowledge that Gabriel Gomez agrees with us about term limits, reducing the size and the scope of the federal government. On a personal front he has less baggage than Mark Sanford. This is Massachusetts where only 11% of the registered voters are Republican. It’s going to be an upset of the same magnitude as Scott Brown winning his special election in December 2009, but it could happen. This is not the person Ed Markey expected or wanted to be running against. If Gabriel Gomez wins on June 25th, then let’s celebrate.
