YOU’RE FIRED: Starbucks Fires Woman Who Wrote ‘PIG’ On Police Officer’s Coffee Cups
"This is absolutely unacceptable, and we are deeply sorry to the law enforcement officer who experienced this."
Last week we learned that a Starbucks barista had printed the word ‘PIG’ instead of a name on 5 drinks ordered by a law enforcement officer on Thanksgiving. Both Starbucks, as well as the female employee reached out to the officer and apologized, and now the company has fired the woman.
The incident occurred at a Starbucks in Glenpool, Oklahoma, population 15,000. Kiefer, OK, where the officer was from, has a population of fewer than 1,700 people.
“Together with law enforcement agencies, Starbucks will jointly look for educational opportunities for our partners across the United States to promote better understanding and respect,” the company wrote on their website.
Kiefer police and Starbucks both say that they want to use the “regrettable incident as an opportunity to leverage our shared platforms to promote greater civility.”
Starbucks has scheduled a meeting with the Kiefer officers to create a joint ‘Coffee with a Cop’ event at Starbucks, so that local law enforcement can meet and interact with both baristas and other people in the community.
Starbucks released the following statement on Friday:
This is absolutely unacceptable, and we are deeply sorry to the law enforcement officer who experienced this. We have also apologized directly to him and connected with the Chief of the Kiefer Police Department as well to express our remorse.
The Starbucks partner who wrote this offensive word on a cup used poor judgement and is no longer a partner after this violation of company policy.
This language is offensive to all law enforcement and is not representative of the deep appreciation we have for police officers who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe.
The woman initially, during her apology actually, claimed it was a joke. Chief O’Mara and his officers did not find the ‘joke’ funny and initially stated that they would not be stopping by the store again.
“What irks me is the absolute and total disrespect for a police officer who, instead of being home with family and enjoying a meal and a football game, is patrolling his little town,” Chief O’Mara wrote in his Facebook post.
“It’s another tiny symptom and a nearly indiscernible shout from a contemptuous, roaring and riotous segment of a misanthropic society that vilifies those who stand for what’s right and glorifies the very people who would usher in the destruction of the social fabric,” O’Mara continued.
Again, I ask! (I know, I ask it a lot!) How do these people do such things being oblivious to the ramifications that are to surely follow? Did this woman just think this was going to go unnoticed? Most Starbucks employees are younger, and are internet savvy! You cannot tell me she does not know the word ‘VIRAL’!
Beyond that! The disrespect in our younger generations has reached a critical level. I know some cops are asses. I’ve written about some cops that were asses! But the LARGE majority of our nation’s law enforcement officers are good. They work hard and risk their lives to protect the rest of us.
I am so glad that she got fired. She needed serious consequences for her stupidity.
BTW, I partially blame Colin Kaepernick. He floated this insanity that it is OK to act a fool and be political on your employers time! #JustSayin.
