When Americans voted for Trump, they elected an ‘outsider’ for President. An outsider who would clean up the swamp, take out the trash and reduce wasted spending, in otherwords, run America like a business. They voted for Trump because he promised to save the hardworking American taxpayers money.
We have already seen some of that promise come to fruition as Trump rolled back some of former President Barack Obama’s out-of-control regulations.
Now, it looks like more savings will be in the works by replacing a $38,000 piece of equipment with an everyday $30 item.
That item? An Xbox 360 controller.
Fox Business News reported that the Navy will use the controllers to replace $38,000 helicopter-style joysticks used on the nuclear-powered attack submarine, the USS Virginia.
It turns out that the joysticks, or photonic mast handgrips, used on submarines have controls that are similar to the controls on an Xbox controller. But the Xbox controller has one thing going for it — most of the sailors on board the submarine are already familiar with how to operate it.
The original handgrip designed by Lockheed Martin to operate the periscopes was heavy and clunky — and expensive.
The Virginian-Pilot reported that Navy officials have been working with Lockheed Martin to use commercial off-the-shelf technology to reduce costs.
Another one of the Navy goals is to develop technology that young people already know and understand, such as touch screens. So replacing the cumbersome handgrip with an Xbox controller seemed like a commonsense move.
Senior Chief Mark Eichenlaub said the clunky handgrips are not cheap and they can only be used on a Virginia-class submarines.
“I can go to any video game store and procure an Xbox controller anywhere in the world, so it makes a very easy replacement,” he told the Pilot.
Talk about cutting costs! That’s a whopper!
Back in March Trump signed an executive order authorizing his top budget official, OMB Director Mick Mulvaney, to examine federal departments in search of places where money can be saved.
We all know under Obama, the government overwhelmingly expanded. Now that President Trump is in office, it’s time to have ‘lean, mean, fighting machine’.
As Trump said earlier, there is duplication and redundancy everywhere.
Trump’s earlier executive order required a thorough examination of every executive department and agency to see where money was being wasted, how services could be improved and whether programs were truly serving American citizens.
Even as recent as this past week, in a meeting with counterparts from around the world, Trump said the U.N. had grown too bureaucratic and ineffective and should reorient its approach. He complained that spending and staff at the U.N. had grown enormously over the years but that “we are not seeing the results in line with this investment.”
In addition, when Trump addressed the UN, he said he believed no single member should shoulder a “disproportionate share of the burden…and that’s militarily or financially.”
After years of excessive expansion of government, it’s time to reel in the spending!
Of course, back in December Trump said, the UN was nothing more than “just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time.” It’s time for the club to reorganize and be held accountable. It’s time to #WakeUp and #MAGA.
…and if that means XBox 360 controllers for all nuclear-powered submarines…so be it!
