Former Principle Gets Slammed With 30 Years After Getting Caught With Child Porn And Enticing A Minor

A former Alabama educator has been convicted and given more than 30 years in prison on child pornography charges. Brett Kirkham, 40, had the sentence given to him on Thursday by U.S. District Judge Scott Coogler after he declared himself guilty in March to owning a pornographic image of a child and tempting a minor for sex.

Kirkham, who is a former principal at Hueytown Middle School in suburban Birmingham and a past human resources director for Jefferson County schools, was arrested after police were able to search his home in June 2016. The guy has been in jail ever since that time.

The former educator was suspected of having a sexual relationship with a student in two counties. Police were able to find records that show Kirkham was once the student’s principal at the school.

Prosecutors came to a deal to drop state charges against Kirkhamin a plea deal, but he still has accompanying charges pending in Tuscaloosa and Jefferson Counties.

Daily Mail:

When Kirkham is released from prison, he will be put on supervised probation for the rest of his life, will have to register as a sex offender and follow all guidelines associated with that registration. He is to never have any contact with a child under the age of 18 without supervision, and is not allowed to work with children under 18.

During the hearing, he made a brief statement to the victims, community and his family. He said:

‘I truly am deeply sorry.’

But Assistant U.S. Attorney John Ward called the circumstances a ‘particularly heinous case. There’s no way to explain away his conduct,’ he said.

A statement prepared by the victim who was a student of Kirkham’s when they engaged in sex acts was read by Ward during the hearing.

‘He acted as if he was my friend, but he was not my friend. I know that now. I now live in constant fear… fearing someone will find out it was me.’

It also described how the victim is now slow to trust people and since the incident, does not have many close friends.

‘One day, when all of this is said and done, I will return to who I was before this.’

It was during the sentencing hearing that officials talked about how Kirkham contacted a 14-year-old to set a molestation and sodomizing of the teen’s eight-year-old brother and another four-year-old child, according to reports. Kirkham even requested that the teen, who lived in Mississippi, send him a video of what happened, which was found on his computer by authorities.

The former principle is charged in Jefferson County ‘with one count of a school employee engaging in a sex act with a student and in Tuscaloosa County on one count of a school employee engaging in a sex act with a student and with possession of child pornography,’ according to legal documents.

Kirkham had utilized a cellphone and computer to ‘persuade, induce and entice’ the victims for sexual pleasure, according to the federal indictment.

There was one of the victims who was born in 1997; while the other in 1993. The accusations against Kirkham are so longstanding that they go back to at least 1996.
