While most Americans were celebrating Easter by attending a church service followed by an Easter brunch, or a traditional ham dinner with family members, it seems some were expressing outrag on social media against an NBC sports writer/editor who made a stupid comment about the American flag during a baseball game in Atlanta.
As it turns out, Craig Calcaterra, made his name from his ShysterBall, a blog which eventually earned him a spot with NBC’s HardballTalk. On Sunday, Craig Calcaterra, a lead baseball writer for NBC Sports, started a Twitter storm by a critique of the unfurling of a huge American flag and air Force flyover during the National Anthem at the Atlanta Braves vs San Diego Padres baseball game at Suntrust Park in Atlanta.
Calcaterra suggested, of all things, it was “inappropriate” for the U.S. flag to be celebrated during the baseball game. That’s right! At a baseball game of all places – where many Americans in the past have associated baseball with hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet or at least used to. You can’t get any more American than that, can you? I guess Calcaterra didn’t see it that way. He wants politics out of sports – including the American Flag. What’s next the ‘National Anthem’?
H/T Conservative Tribune:
NBC baseball writer Craig Calcaterra sent a tweet early Easter morning that displayed outright disrespect for the United States.
That tweet was accompanied by a picture of a huge American flag spread out across a baseball field.
See the tweet below:
“Will you keep politics out of sports, please. We like sports to be politics-free”
Hey guy, and I use that term loosely. That is my flag, your flag, and our flag. If you don’t see it that way…..GTFU.

Get the F— . . . under? Get the F— . . . Uribe? Get the F— . . . Ubaldo? Get the F— . . . uber alles?
If you’re unaware how patriotism and all that surrounds it has always been a tool in the political took box, you know little of history.
That’s when people fired back against the nonsense, hoping to send him a wake-up call.
When you’re dangerously close to an epiphany but . . . aren’t . . . quite . . . there.
@craigcalcaterra Patriotism is not political. It shows that you love your country. Is anyone that shows love for their country political? No.
Another user blamed Calcaterra’s liberal bias for his unpatriotic comments.
Hi. This post set off the entire right wing media and caused a thousand people to tell me to move to North Korea.
The flag is an inanimate object. It’s not political. People are. You’re a leftist that’s why the flag bothers you.
Calcaterra followed that up with a number of tweets in defense of Kaepernick.
Kaepernick and the Seahawks are not “protesting the national anthem.” They’re protesting violence and injustice DURING the anthem.
Anyway, stop allowing people to ignore actual issues in favor of defending non-controversial things in the interests of self-righteousness.
After a slew of tweets, Calcaterra decided to write his own story on the controversial tweet. Titled “A few words on baseball, giant American Flags and Patriotism,” the story ran Sunday on NBC Sports.
While Calcaterra did say that the American flag is an important part of any American baseball game, he also restated his belief that the flag has become much more of a political statement in the past 16 years.
“Casting oneself as more patriotic than the other guy has always been a primary tool in the politician’s toolbox, but it has become a far more important tool in the past 16 years,” he continued, referring to more frequent patriotic displays after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on U.S. soil.”
“Patriotism is a feeling and an ideal, and like any other feeling or ideal, it can be twisted to any number of other ends, good, bad or neutral,” his post concluded. “Even in baseball.”
Maybe Calcaterra should have stuck to being a litigation lawyer. If he can’t make a good argument to defend the American flag, the National Anthem and a flyover by the Air Force at a baseball game being patriotic symbols and statements….well, take a hike! Calcaterra can join the other liberals who said they would move out of the country if Trump were elected president, but haven’t done so yet. Bye! Bye!
Can you say, What a MORON?!
I’m guessing Calcaterra has probably never honored a soldier or veteran at a baseball game either, because if he did he might understand and respect the display of patriotism when he sees it. I’m also guessing that ratings for NBC baseball must be down, because it seems this guy is just looking for a ‘bump’ or the attention from a bigger audience.
Sad to say, I think most Americans are getting tired of others disrespecting American patriotism. Don’t believe me, look at what happened in the NFL after players like Colin Kaepernick and others decided kneeling during the National Anthem was a good thing. Many Americans protested by turning their TV sets off or tuning out the NFL. Ratings dropped. Of course, Calcaterra probably doesn’t know THAT, because he was too busy SUPPORTING Kaepernick and others like him.
Liberals like Calcaterra can’t seem to handle anything to do with patriotism. We have 8 years of Obama to thank for that. Calcaterra was probably a supporter of BLM too. When will liberals learn, that you can’t get any more patriotic than being at a baseball game and seeing the great symbol of freedom – our American flag, while singing the National Anthem, and then having the Air Force flyover? It doesn’t get any better!
Calcaterra this IS America! If you don’t like it….find another country to live in. For the rest of us that are proud of our military, proud of our flag, and proud of our country and LIKE attending a baseball game to see these symbols of patriotism, here’s a good one:
