THIS Michigan City Is Axing Their Sanctuary City Status

0

Since President Trump took office he has been vociferously cracking down on illegal immigration. With the help of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the President has been able to conduct extensive ICE raids that have resulted in the detainment of hundreds of criminal illegal aliens. Now they are working together to set up new federal guidelines for immigration offenses and their prosecution. Because of this crackdown one city in Michigan is now rescinding their status as a ‘sanctuary city’.

Lansing, Michigan finally wised up and reversed their poor decision to make themselves a sanctuary city. Whereby illegal aliens are protected from federal arrest and prosecution; local businesses predominantly made up of illegal aliens are castigating this decision very publicly.

Previously the Lansing City Council had passed a resolution prohibiting police officers and law enforcement officials from asking about the status of an individual’s citizenship while in the process of questioning them. Unless that is it was mandated by a court order.

Originally it had been unanimously supported, but it was rescinded by city council members just last week in a 5-2 vote. Some business owners lobbied the council arguing that the term ‘sanctuary city’ drew unwelcome attention that they did not want to be associated with.

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce and Lansing Regional Chamber wrote the following to city council members about the issue saying the following,

“Lansing is a diverse community, rich with history and culture. It’s what makes our city a welcoming destination to live, work and thrive. Recent actions of City Council, whether intended or not, have placed an unnecessary target on the City of Lansing while jeopardizing millions of dollars in federal funding that impacts the city budget.”

Of course snowflake liberals decried the new decision. During a crowded town council meeting, they childishly yelled at them for being what they deemed spineless and then threatened them all that they would lose their seats in the next election. But that did not deter the town council.

Despite this new legislation that removes the term ‘sanctuary city’ Lansing officials still maintain they are a welcoming city. They further promised that they were not directing city workers to break any federal laws. Which is something that other sanctuary cities are known to do.

Councilwoman Judi Brown Clark said,

“The term ‘sanctuary’ in the resolution has become very problematic and distracting — so distracting in my opinion that’s it’s taken away from the intent of our resolution, which is to protect individuals. It’s basically a ‘don’t ask’ policy, which was outlined by the mayor’s executive order and what we had in our policy complements that. I think ultimately what we learned is … we thought we could define what ‘sanctuary city’ meant, and in actuality it has its own negative connotation. The only way to take that away is to take that word away.”

Others took a different approach to the situation. CEO Richard Studley who is also the Michigan Chamber President said that the city is wasting its time on these political statements. Furthermore, that the council and the people should focus on really serious economic issues facing our country. He said,

“I have no problem with the earlier resolution that affirmed the city’s status as a welcoming city. The challenge is with the language declaring the city a ‘sanctuary city’ — adopted hastily with little debate. I think that it is easily misinterpreted or misunderstood.”

The reason this issue is so heated and divisive is because lawmakers in Michigan are currently in the middle of trying to enact guidelines that would prohibit city workers from cooperating with any federal authorities when coming to them on immigration issues.

Sanctuary cities allow their state employees to not comply with federal authorities when they are trying to arrest illegal aliens. This in itself is illegal. Sanctuary cities are encouraging their employees to break the law. While that may have been alright under the Obama administration, there is a new President in office. President Trump will not allow this to continue. Sanctuary cities will shortly come to an end.
