Senator Chuck Schumer announced today that he was going to spearhead a government shutdown if Republican Senators signed a spending bill for the President’s proposed border wall along the Mexican-American boundary. His threat also includes a spending bill that would defund Planned Parenthood. If we didn’t hate him enough already we certainly will now.
“If Republicans insist on inserting poison pill riders such as defunding Planned Parenthood, building a border wall or starting a deportation force, they will be shutting down the government and delivering a severe blow to our economy.”
Schumer worked with other Senate Democrats to co-sign a letter sent to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky expressing their stance and disapproval. The letter was also sent to Appropriations Committee Chairman, Thad Cochran of Mississippi.
The current budget bill expires at the end of April on the 28th. Another spending bill must be passed before then, for the time after. If it is not signed, the government will get shut down. But Schumer maintained that their primary concern is the border wall. He said the following in their letter,
“First, many experts believe that such a border wall will not work. Second, there is real concern that the administration, put simply, has no plan to build the border wall. Finally, there are objections to the construction of a wall from Democratic and Republican members of Congress that represent border states. Given these and other concerns, we believe it would be inappropriate to insist on the inclusion of such funding in a must-pass appropriations bill that is needed for the Republican majority in control of the Congress to avert a government shutdown so early in President Trump’s administration.”
One of the only ways he and his colleagues could combat these issues is with Senate filibusters which they have attempted to use in the past, despite criticizing Republicans for doing the same thing. However, ten of his colleagues face re-election in the 2018 midterm elections in states that Donald Trump won.
Meaning that Democrats could lose even more ground than they already have, halfway through Donald Trump’s presidency, making it near impossible for them to combat the President’s agenda the way they want. No doubt, the President would use every weapon in his artillery to work on behalf of Republicans in those states to make sure they win.
The last government shutdown occurred in October 2013 over defunding the Affordable Care Act. If a shutdown were to occur again it could threaten the very fragile peace that is left in Congress, the White House, and the Senate. Americans would ultimately pay the price.
