After a few months on the job former Senator Jeff Sessions and current Attorney General is taking a swing at illegal sanctuary cities. Sessions told media outlets this past Monday that those who don’t cooperate with federal authorities trying to detain illegal immigrants will suffer the consequences in decreased funding.
The Attorney General put these sanctuary cities on notice during the Press Secretary’s briefing at the White House. The purpose of his comments was also to warn of the crackdown on these sanctuary cities. He said,
“Such policies cannot continue. They make our nation less safe by putting dangerous criminals back on the street. The American people know that when cities and states refuse to help enforce immigration laws, our nation is less safe.”
Sanctuary cities have long been endorsed by the Obama administration. They are cities that refused to aid the Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials in detaining those who are being sought for detention on illegal immigration charges. However, legally they are obligated to inform the federal authorities if they have an illegal immigrant in custody but they don’t always do that.
Cities such as New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles are known for being well known sanctuary cities. In order to ensure that sanctuary cities are following the law the Attorney General has stated the Department of Justice will apply extra measures to ensure those cities applying for federal grants are working in accordance with federal immigration law.
“Failure to deport aliens who are convicted of criminal offenses puts whole communities at risk, especially immigrant communities in the very sanctuary jurisdictions that seek to protect the perpetrators.”
Combatting illegal immigration has been a rallying cry for the Trump campaign and now his administration. After a young woman was murdered by an illegal alien who had been released multiple times in California the President used this tragedy to shine a light on this serious issue. Sessions has always been an ardent and staunch supporter of this crackdown on illegal immigration.
As the President has always said, we don’t have any problem with legal immigration. We have a problem with illegal immigration. Because coming to the United States is a privilege and not a right.
