Vice President Mike Pence made a strong stand in favor of his boss President Trump. He went to bat for him when it came to the media who have really been abusing him as of late. But he also maintained that the White House and the administration absolutely support the free press. However, he insisted that the President will remain adversarial with the press when they get out of line.
Vice President Pence said the following,
“Rest assured the president and I both strongly support a free and independent press, but you can anticipate that the president and all of us will continue to call out the media when they play fast and loose with the facts. And the truth is that we have in President Trump someone who has a unique ability to speak directly to the American people. And when the media gets it wrong, I promise you President Trump will take his case straight to the American people and set the record straight.”
Considering the constant use of Twitter and social media by the administration, he was likely referring to the fact that the President could simply access the American people through that conduit. Pence’s defense of Trump comes at a time when just last Friday the President said “the press is the enemy” to the American people.
Senator John McCain has been one of Trump’s strongest detractors. These recent comments brought out just as much furor as he has shown in the past. The Senator told Chuck Todd of NBC that the press is a necessary variable in a free, Democratic, and American society. He drew a parallel with dictatorships and their elimination of the free press.

“If you want to preserve Democracy as we know it, you have to have a free and many times adversarial press. And without it, I’m afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time. That’s how dictators get started.
Chris Wallace of Fox News also took umbrage with the President’s comments. Fox News has always been hailed a conservative news outlet. It seems the President is even making enemies with those who have had his back in the past.
