It Starts: GOP Congressman Introduces Bill to Defund Sanctuary Cities!

0

On January 20th, Donald Trump will be inaugurated as our next president. Hopefully, shortly thereafter, we will see the defunding of sanctuary cities. Afterall, President-elect Donald Trump supported the idea of defunding sanctuary cities as a punishment for violating federal immigration law.

Here’s President-elect Trump on his promises to end ‘sanctuary cities’:

Get ready to start your engines! On Thursday, Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Lou Barletta introduced the Mobilizing Against Sanctuary Cities Act (H.R. 83), a bill intended to halt all federal funds going to states or localities that defy enforcement of federal immigration laws.

H/T Daily Caller:

The bill is the first piece of legislation introduced by Barletta in the 115th Congress and is the third time the congressman has introduced the provision — introducing it in 2011 during his freshman year in Congress and again in 2015.  The last time it was introduced, the legislation had 24 co-sponsors.

However, Barletta previously introduced his bill during periods when the chances of passage was low given the makeup of the Senate and the President Obama’s veto pen. Now Barletta’s legislation has better chances given that President-elect Donald Trump has supported the idea of defunding sanctuary cities as a punishment for violating federal immigration law.

“One of the principal duties of the government is to protect its citizens, and the idea of sanctuary cities runs completely counter to that responsibility,” Barletta said in a statement. “Too many mayors and local governments think that they are above federal law and place their own ideology ahead of the safety of their residents.  This bill will stop that practice by saying to these sanctuary cities, ‘If you refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement, you will lose your federal funding.’”

The Mobilizing Against Sanctuary Cities Act bans any federal funding for a minimum period of one year to any state or local government, which has a policy or law that obstructs them from aiding immigration authorities in enforcing federal immigration law.

According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), about 300 such localities in the United States are considered sanctuary cities. Barletta’s bill instructs the attorney general to compile an annual list of these cities and issue a report on any particular state or locality upon request from a member of Congress.

In addition, another bill being re-introduced in Congress is Kate’s Law, giving lawmakers another run at legislation to impose a mandatory minimum five-year prison term on foreigners who re-enter the U.S. after being deported.

The legislation is named for Kate Steinle, a 32-year-old who was fatally shot by a felon in San Francisco who had been deported but returned to the U.S., authorities said. The House passed the bill last year, but it died in a filibuster by Senate Democrats. The bill was introduced last week in the House by Rep. Steve King, Iowa Republican, and in the Senate by Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican.

Isn’t it nice to see people in Congress and DC fighting to return our country to greatness and rid our nation of sanctuary cities? These atrocities created by President Obama, have invited and harbored illegals and terrorists who have committed horrific crimes against many innocent Americans, like Kate Steinle. Steinle’s and the deaths of others caused because of Obama’s failure to enforce the current immigration laws. Over $650 billion of taxpayers’ money went to support Obama’s illegal executive action.

On January 20th, President Trump begins the clean up of “Obama’s errors”! It’s time to reverse Obama’s unconstitutional excecutive actions and orders! It’s time to “Make America Great Again”!
