It’s really going to be a long four years – and hopefully eight – for Democrats and people who hate guns and the 2nd Amendment. Republicans in the House, led by Representative Richard Hudson, a Republican from North Carolina, have put forward a bill with 93 cosponsors that would make a concealed carry permit in one state valid in all 50.
Of the 93 cosponsors in the House only two are Democrats.
The bill has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee, where Chairman Bob Goodlatte is a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment and has a lifetime ‘A rating’ from the National Rifle Association. The bill should make it to the floor of the House for a vote where it will certainly pass. There are probably a handful of other Democrats who will join with the 2 Democratic cosponsors.
The fun will come in the Senate where Republicans only have a 52 – 48 advantage and the bill will be subject to a filibuster by Democrats. Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats are about to get wiped out on Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks thanks to Harry Reid taking a filibuster away from the Minority party for cabinet picks and judicial nominations.
Democrats will certainly pander to their anti-gun base and filibuster this bill. There’s almost no chance it will make it to Donald Trump’s desk for his signature.
And that’s the good news.
Why would I say Democrats filibustering national reciprocity on concealed carry is a good thing? Because there’s an election coming up in 2018 and 25 Democratic Senators are up for reelection. The majority of those are running in states that Donald Trump carried in November and a filibuster against this kind of legislation will make great commercials.
Republicans could potentially pick up 10 or more Senate seats in 2018. That would give them 62+ votes in the Senate and Democrats can forget filibustering anything.
It’s almost certain that Donald Trump will sign this legislation when it comes to his desk, whether it’s this year or when the new Congress is convened in 2019. He has a history of being pro-2nd Amendment and one of his sons is working to get suppressors taken off the list of things that require ATF approval to purchase.
Donald Trump Jr. is approaching the issue in a unique way, having nothing to do with the 2nd Amendment. He’s approaching it, with the help of the firearm industry from a health and safety perspective. Guns make a lot of noise when they’re fired and having a sound suppressor will reduce the decibel level of a gunshot by 20% to 30% making them less damaging to hearing.
It will be interesting to see if Trump Jr. can get legislation going on this one.
Things are looking up for the 2nd Amendment, Making America Great Again.
