So far, Donald Trump is hitting it out of the park with his personnel choices and Kansas Congressman Mike Pompeo’s nomination as the next CIA director is an absolute winner.
Pompeo was a member of the House Intelligence Committee and has a well-earned reputation among his colleagues for aggressive investigations into the Obama administration’s secret deals with Iran.
For starters, he thought the deal with Iran was a really bad deal, and he wants to keep Guantánamo Bay open. That’s two-for-two in my book.
Here’s former CIA director James Wolseley talking about Mike Pompeo.
Restoring America’s place in the world, Donald Trump’s first priority, is going to lay waste to Barack Obama’s legacy. Congressman Pompeo is in a perfect position to help to both of those things. He understands the way that the Iran deal was built on lies by the same guy who said “If you like your doctor you can keep him…” and will be in the perfect position to help Donald Trump drive a stake through the heart of the deal that gives the terrorists who run Iran the ability to build a nuclear weapon.
In a statement accepting the position Pompeo said, “I am honored and humbled to accept the president elects nomination to lead the Central intelligence agency. This was a difficult decision. I have genuinely loved representing the people of Kansas in Congress – working to make our community stronger and more prosperous. But ultimately the opportunity to lead the world’s finest intelligence warriors, who labored tirelessly to keep this nation and Kansas safe, is a call to service I cannot ignore.”
Pompeo served as an Army officer, graduated from West Point first in his class, and has a distinguished career in Congress.
Democrats haven’t been heard from with respect to Pompeo’s nomination, but those who know the intelligence community are thrilled. One senior Senate staffer who works on Middle East issues said, “He has fearlessly held the administration accountable for its disastrous Iran policy and its manipulation of intelligence at CENTCOM. Our country needs good people like Pompeo to lead our intelligence agencies. I cannot think of a better choice to run the CIA than Mike Pompeo. He has emerged as one of the most respected and effective national security experts in the House.”
This is a very encouraging sign for our nation for at least two reasons. First of all, the CIA will have a no-nonsense director who, unlike Barack Obama and his minions, understands the world as it is. Secondly, the choice of Mike Pompeo for CIA director speaks volumes about Donald Trump’s ability to surround himself with not just good people, but excellent people.
I’m looking to an exciting four years of Donald Trump’s first term. I’m proud to be an American, and if the first two weeks following his election are any indication, Donald Trump really will Make America Great Again.
