Johnthony Walker, the Chattanooga School bus driver that killed 5 children, asked them if they were “ready to die” before speeding up and crashing the bus into a tree.
Walker has been arrested for vehicular manslaughter for the deaths of the 5 Woodmore Elementary school children.
Another 20 students are still hospitalized, 6 in critical condition, from the crash that authorities are saying occurred as the result of “very high speed”.
The NY DAILY NEWS reports:
Johnthony Walker was speeding “well above” the posted speed limit and lost control of the bus before it flipped over and wrapped around a tree, police wrote in an arrest affidavit.
“My daughter said, right before the bus flipped, that he was speeding around the curb, and asked them, ‘are y’all ready to die?’” a mom, who had three children on the bus, told CBS News Radio. One of her three kids died in the wreck. But Walker’s mom called the wreck a “drastic accident” — and insisted that her son tried to help the kids by pulling them off of the overturned bus.
“He was trying to get (the children) off the bus,” Gwenevere Cook, whom Walker called just minutes after the crash, told CNN. “All the bodies were limp.”
Walker, 24, is charged with five counts of vehicular homicide for the deaths of five Woodmore Elementary School students: three fourth graders, a first grader and a kindergartner. None of the children — four girls and a boy — have been identified.
Leave it to mom to support her son. I get that. But momma, just because afterward he felt bad and helped does not mean he is innocent.
What a horrific tragedy right before Thanksgiving. Every year, around this time, the holidays will become no more than a tragic reminder to these families and the community.
Our prayers go out to those children who are hospitalized as well as all the families involved.
Please always be careful when in a vehicle. It is statistically the most dangerous thing we do, and some are not so careful. Death can happen so easily. Sad.
