A dog really can be a man’s best friend. Erika stepped out of her home last Sunday for just a minute to retrieve something out of her car. When she turned around her house was engulfed in flames, and that’s when she panicked.
Viviana Claire, Erika’s eight-month-old daughter, was inside her house on Gough Street when everything happened. Being so young she couldn’t get out of her home and her mother tried her best to save her daughter, but, a few burned hands later she realized that neither she nor anyone else could get inside the house while her little girl was burning alive.
A very heart-broken Erika said …’I just heard her crying and I couldn’t get to her,’ to WBAL-TV. ‘I tried really hard, everyone in the neighborhood tried. They were kicking the doors in and kicking the windows out. I couldn’t (get her out). Nobody could.’
Poremski has burned on her face and hands from where she repeatedly tried to go into the house to get her little girl but was beaten back by the raging flames.
Firemen finally were able to get to the little girl, who was inside her bedroom. What they saw there astonished them.
The family dog, Polo, was lying on top of the girl and protecting her with his body.
Pictures of the dog show a small curly-haired black pooch.
Firefighters said the dog wouldn’t even come out of the house. Because the dog was lying over top of Viviana, only one side of her body was burned. Unfortunately, that was still 20 percent of her body, and she remains in critical condition in the hospital.
Polo did not make it after being taken out of the fire.
This story is heartwrenching and heartwarming at the same time! The dog stayed with this little girl the entire time and wouldn’t even come downstairs to leave the house. The tearful mother reported that this was her first “baby” and she lost him…
Now she is just praying she doesn’t lose her daughter as well. Everything happened so fast one minute her life was completely normal and the next she almost lost everything.
