The recently-signed Every Student Succeeds Act contains a section (858) that protects the right of parents to allow their children to walk to school.
Actually, it protects the basic right to go out alone, period!
WHY? Why would the Federal Government have to address this issue?
Here is one BIG example:
PRINCIPAL HOLLY RAY SAYS PARENTS WILL BE ARRESTED IF THEY WALK KIDS TO OR FROM SCHOOL! <~~You will be horrified at this situation at the Magnolia ISD in Texas!
Or how about the mother who was arrested because her eight-year old son showed some initiative and walked to school after he missed the bus.
Or the story of the Meitiv family of Maryland, whose kids (age 10 and 6) were picked up by cops in three cars and detained for six hours, away from their parents.
There are a plethora of recent examples of such stupidity and over reach.
An article for the New York Post points out that today kids are actually “in less danger” as they wander the streets alone than their parents ever were.
“Ironically, kids walking to school today are actually very safe—safer than their parents were. The crime level is back to what it was in 1963,” she says. “As Sen. Lee wrote in an e-mail to me, ‘America faces great challenges today. Kids walking to school with their parents’ permission is not one of them.’”
The recent situation at Magnolia ISD went viral. People are furious. Even AFTER the law was passed, Principal Holly Ray and school Superintendent Todd Stephens have dug in to the insanity.
Todd Stephens even sent out a letter to the parents lying about the stats of the withdrawal rate at the school.
He stated that there were only 12 when an Open Records back at the beginning of the school year showed in just the first two months there were 67!! (A plethora of OR requests were made yesterday to find an update)
(Furious yet? Time for mass calls and contact by outraged Americans! Read the insanity in this Texas school:

Superintendent Dr. Todd Stephens firstname.lastname@example.org (281) 356-3571)
I am generally of the opinion that the Federal Government is always overreaching, and ignores often the 10th Amendment.
This time they are actually doing the right thing and making sure that local authorities and elected officials stay within the bounds of the freedom and liberty that are ingrained in the Constitution.
These school actions are being taken in the name of security. I will let Ben Franklin address that!
Then… there is this!!
