First things first, Donald Trump is no Ronald Reagan. There will never be another Ronald Reagan, he was uniquely a “man for his time.”
On the other hand, one point of comparison may be apt, Reagan won by huge margins by convincing Democratic voters, many of them “yellow dog Democrats” to cross the line and vote for him. A new survey says Donald Trump may be doing the same thing.
The survey by Washington-based Mercury Analytics is a combination online questionnaire and “dial-test” of Trump’s first big campaign ad among 916 self-proclaimed “likely voters” – the video shows the ad and the dial test results. It took place primarily Wednesday and Thursday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.
About 14% of so-called “Republican voters” say they’d vote for Hillary. They’re probably voting for Hillary no matter who the Republicans nominate, with the possible exception of Jeb! who is a transparty version of Hillary.
The 20% of Democrat defectors to Trump appear to be hard core, they like him more than the Republicans do.
This should be a head-scratch call for Democrats and a real wake-up call for the Republican establishment. Of course the establishment has been asleep for so long they make Rip van Winkle look like an insomniac.
