“If you like your doctor …” “Your health insurance cost will drop by $2,500 …” “If Assad uses chemical weapons he will have crossed a Red Line …” etc. etc. etc.
He’s at it again. For some perspective, let’s go back to the 2008 campaign when people were saying that candidate Barack Obama wanted to confiscate all the guns in the US.
“If you like your guns, you can keep your guns!”
That was then, this is now, and this isn’t the first time he’s made these references to Great Britain and Australia.
Both of those countries are NOT like ours Mr. President. They don’t have a 2nd Amendment. They don’t even have a 1st Amendment. More on that in a minute.
The President and his ilk like to say that the US is the most dangerous place in the world when it comes to mass shootings. According to statistics there were 227 “rampage shooting fatalities” in the US. But what does that really mean?
Hint, not what you’d think. The reason for that? Gun confiscators only talk about gross numbers. Let’s look at the numbers and see what they really say .
Here’s a chart that will clarify things for you.
The key here is the second column, deaths in relation to the population of the nation. The US has a larger population than all of Europe so saying anything happens more times in the US without making that “anything” relative to population is foolishness. And since we’re talking about Barack Obama, “foolishness” is a relevant word.
In fact, once the data is normalized for population the US is #6 on the list behind five countries that have VERY restrictive gun laws.
Is it a tragedy that 10 people were murdered in Oregon? Of course it is. It’s a bigger tragedy that there were only two guns on the campus that fateful day, one belonging to the shooter and one belonging to a US military vet who has a concealed carry permit and was carrying his gun against school rules. Note that the school security guard – ONE guard – was not armed. The vet was 200 yards from the classroom when the shooting started and couldn’t get there in time to intervene.
I don’t know if there’s a solution to “mass shootings” but I do agree with [drumroll]Jeb! when he said “stuff happens” when asked about it. I do know that confiscating guns as they did in Britain and Australia is NOT the solution. It will only lead to much higher violent crime rates in the US just like it did in Britain and Australia.
