Number on Food Stamps Increased Dramatically … So This State Just Took Drastic Measures

New Mexico is following the lead of Maine’s Republican Governor to make sure people getting food stamps deserve them .

More than 9,000 Maine residents have been removed from the state’s food stamp program since Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s administration began enforcing work and volunteer requirements late last year, officials said.

New Mexico is about to follow suit.

Food stamp recipients will be required to spend at least 80 hours per month working, volunteering, or looking for work in order to qualify. The idea is that if people are required to put forth some effort to get their food stamps they’ll go to work and leave the program.

Needless to say, children will be starving in the streets.

“Ultimately, it’s going to be the family that is going to have less Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits if the adult is not able to comply,” Louise Pocock, a staff attorney with the New Mexico Center for Law and Poverty told KOAT.

“Requirements that limit people’s access, whether they be through work or other state option requirements such as they’re implementing, undermine the purpose of the SNAP,” she said.

Republicans should turn this back on the left and do it in their own words. For instance, “This is just about fairness. People have to work to feed their families why shouldn’t food stamp recipients put forth some effort for the help they’re getting?”

Should people be required to work for their benefits? Should benefits be time limited? After all, welfare is supposed to be a “safety net,” a “hand-up” not a “hand-out.” What do you think?
