Gotta love the bulldog in Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC)! He spun Secret Service Head, Joseph Clancy, in circles today after finding out that he was trying to mislead Congress about the full release of the video concerning the accident where two top Service officials drove drunk into a barrier surrounding a crime scene at the white house.
The conversation went like this:
Rep. Gowdy: Does this committee have every single bit of video footage available from that evening?
Joseph Clancy: (Blank deer in the headlights stare) Say…umm..I’m sorry Sir?
Rep. Gowdy: Does this committee have all available video footage available from that evening?
Joseph Clancy: It does not, Sir.
Rep. Gowdy: Why not?
Joseph Clancy: Sir uh, we had …umm, provided that…umm..footage…video…um that we had to this committee…
Rep. Gowdy: All of it….
Joseph Clancy: (Stuttering) We..have shown…two…clips..we have not shown all of it.
Rep. Gowdy: That’s not my question director.
After explaining where congress sits in the order of the chain of command, Gowdy continues:
Rep. Gowdy: …so why would you not turn over all video footage to this committee?
Joseph Clancy: Congressman, we will show all video…uh at anytime…day or night….that this committee would like to review…We have done that…in fact the chairman (Rep. Chaffetz) was the first…I believe to see this…
Rep. Chaffetz: With all due respect, that is just not true!
Joseph Clancy: (More deer in the headlights) If I have to correct the record, I would like to correct it.
It gets worse, Rep Chaffetz goes on to let us know that he has seen less than one minute of the available video.
The committee meeting goes on with plenty of “deer in the headlights” moments and is a must see. Joseph Clancy tries to use every excuse in the book as to not let congress have a copy of all video related to the incident. This of course is what is left after Clancy allowed much of the video to be destroyed in the first place.
Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) questions Secret Service Director Clancy. Watch the complete hearing here:
Trey Gowdy also points out to Mr. Clancy that congress also is in charge of the money that gets allocated to the Secret Service, an obvious reference to Mr. Clancy’s request to build another White House!
Secret Service head Joseph Clancy had told lawmakers that he is committed to doing “what is necessary” to put the troubled agency back on track…then asked to build a full scale model of the White House!
The Secret Service scandals have become never-ending fodder for comedians, including Michael Loftus and Rodney Conover on the new TV comedy, The Flipside with Michael Loftus:
