The Obama Department of Selective Justice announced a plea deal with David Petraeus related to providing classified journals to his mistress, journalist Paula Broadwell, when he was Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
Mr. Petraeus has agreed to plead guilty to one count of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material, a misdemeanor. He is eligible for up to one year in prison, but prosecutors will recommend a sentence of probation for two years and a $40,000 fine.
Let’s be really clear on this, we think that Petraeus got off easy. This should be a lesson, but it likely won’t be, for ambitious men (and women) in positions of power. Lesson: Think with your brain not your crotch.
Petraeus is rightly considered a military genius – or at least close – for his execution of “the surge” that pacified Iraq and made it a place where President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden could claim credit for “success in Iraq.”
Of course that was before Obama declared we had “won the war” and withdrew all of US forces, leaving the Iraqis to the tender mercies of ISIS. A result, by-the-way, that was forecast by everybody who has a clue about training a military force.
Petraeus was at the CIA when Benghazi went down. When the flap about how much was known about the attack and by who, Petraeus was quiet as a church mouse. He said not a word about the statements released over-and-over again by administration officials including President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. They were selling the idea that “a video” was the cause of the death of our ambassador and four brave former SEALs who gave their lives fighting off the terrorist attack on the Benghazi compound. Nary a peep from the Director of the CIA.
At the time, we wondered what kept his silence and now we know. The FBI had the goods on him with respect to Broadwell. He was undoubtedly told that if he countered the administration’s lies with what he knew to be the truth, he’d go to prison. Given the charge, he likely would have lost his military retirement as well. So, he kept his mouth shut, and to this day has never talked about Benghazi in any detail.
Petraeus has been mentioned, seriously mentioned, over the years as a possible Republican presidential candidate. That’s now done too. He will serve out his probation, keeping his mouth shut for the next two years, and make big bucks on Wall St. Gee, we wonder why the probation was two years? You don’t think it could have anything to do with protecting the former Secretary of State from scandal prior to 2016, do you? Yeah, neither do we.
We think the conduct of the Obama administration and especially Eric Holder’s Department of Some Kind of Justice has been deplorable, but that’s really just par for the course (no pun intended.) They’ve gotten some heat from both sides of the political aisle. Democrats, who passionately hate everything military, wanted a high profile prosecution and a jail sentence for Petraeus. Those Republicans who’ve spoke out were outraged by the way Holder & Co. have drug out the “investigation.”
We believe that Holder did nothing prior to the 2012 election because they didn’t want Benghazi in the headlines and certainly Petraeus would have had no reason to not tell the truth. We also believe that he has done nothing until now to keep anything related to Benghazi under wraps until Obama leaves office and the 2016 election is over.
Believe or not, we don’t fault Obama or Holder for doing what they’ve done. Everybody with a double digit IQ knows they’re thieves and when you give thieves the keys to your house and tell them when you’ll be out of town you can’t expect to come home to anything but an empty house. David Petraeus, knowing full well the character of the man who was his Commander in Chief, gave him the house keys. The man who is fully responsible for Petraeus’ silence is none other than David Petraeus.
This is the consequence of thinking with your dick. Unfortunately, Petraeus isn’t really going to pay much of a penalty for his stupidity. Sure, his marriage is over-and-done-with, his career is tarnished, and he’ll never be a candidate for President. But he’ll keep his flag officer pension and privileges, and his friends on Wall St. will make sure he never misses a meal.
Actually, this is one time we side with the far left. The nation would have been better off with a high profile trial and Petraeus likely going to prison. It would have been a stark lesson, and we’d also likely know exactly what happened in Benghazi.
