As many of you may know, US Senator Harry Reid has been perhaps the worst Senate leader in my short lifetime (just 40 years, but still, he’s been really bad). Today, we can all sigh our relief! The Nevada Democrat has decided that he’ll be retiring at the end of this term.
This comes as no surprise to many of us who follow the US Senate. Reid had an accident while exercising at his home recently.
The accident was quite bad and bruised his face, broke some of his ribs, and suffered broken facial bones. Reid appears to have taken the accident as a wake up call and reports that he has had time to think during the ‘down time’ that was needed to recuperate after the fall. Reportedly, a piece of exercise equipment that Reid was using broke and he fell causing the injuries.
The five-term Nevada Democratic senator announced the decision in a YouTube video message.
Appearing with bruises on his face from the recent accident, Reid, 75, said , “We’ve got to be more concerned about the country, the Senate, the state of Nevada than us. And as a result of that, I’m not going to run for reelection,” the senator said in the video.
Reid has suggested that Democrats select NY Democrat Charles “Chuck” Schumer to succeed him. When Reid retires in 2017, he will have served as the Senate Democratic leader for 12 years—longer than all but two other senators in the country’s history.
