In Dallas, when the first U.S. Ebola patient showed up last month, health officials quickly reassured us that they were prepared to handle it, but a nurse who treated him became infected and people are wondering if safety precautions were good enough or were properly followed?
A nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital wearing full protective gear when she treated Duncan, somehow got infected. The CDC is conducting an investigation into what went wrong and I hope trying to prevent it from happening again.
What’s a hospital supposed to do if an Ebola patient shows up?
The nurse had “extensive contact” on “multiple occasions” with Duncan, .. “but at some point, there was a breach in protocol, and that breach in protocol resulted in this infection,” said Dr. Tom Frieden, the director of the CDC. “The (Ebola treatment) protocols work. … But we know that even a single lapse or breach can result in infection.”
