In President Obama’s State of the Union Address later tonight he will start off (for the estimated 20% of Americans who care to watch his speech) by saying “the State of the Union is Strong” and everyone in the Chamber will clap, because that is what you are supposed to do. This is of coarse smoke and mirrors and other more sailor-like terms I could use. When I previewed the President’s speech it was no surprise that a major focus of his speech would be on immigration reform and expanding “explaining” Executive powers (Woodrow Wilson and FDR are smiling up from Hades). However, I was surprised when I saw he was including income inequality in his speech. Why whip this dead horse? Then it came to me from a most unusual source, a single mother.
You see, my wife and I are foster parents. We have two wonderful young babies keeping us very busy, a boy and a girl. The girl’s mother would love to have her daughter back, but in order to do so she must first secure a full-time job to be able to provide for the two of them (dad is not around, go figure). Here in lies the difficulty. Since the passage of The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) minimum wage employers that would hire this young mother have cut back their hours from 40+ to 25 hours or less. 25 hours at minimum wage does not provide a stable income for a young mother.
Lower income Americans have already received the shaft by being forced to purchase Obamacare whether they want it or not, but now they must do so with less money, since many of their employers are cutting back their hours. Democrats realize that burning their base in this way with policies they created is bad for business, so they must “stand up for the little guys”, subsidize Obamacare, and raise the Federal minimum wage. If our government does end up raising the minimum wage many unsuspecting Americans will feel the Democrats are out there fighting for them. They will believe this, just as they believe that abortion is about women’s rights and not about population control. Liberal policies care nothing for the welfare of the individual. They are viewed on the surface as being compassionate, but their ultimate agenda is to control the weak and keep them enslaved. It is troubling that the lives of so many Americans become part of the chess game that is Washington’ politics and maintaining power at all costs.
