Sheriff says NO! to Obama

President Obama ordered US flags to be flown at half-staff to honor Nelson Mandella. Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark said NO. When you get right down to it, he said Hell NO!

A South Carolina sheriff is refusing to lower the American flag in tribute to Nelson Mandela, saying the honor should be reserved for American citizens.

President Obama ordered flags lowered to half-staff for the international icon until sunset Monday.

But Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark says not in his department.

“It’s just my simple opinion that the flag should only be lowered to half-staff for Americans who sacrificed for their country,” Clark told CNN affiliate WHNS.

It should be lowered at the U.S. Embassy in South Africa, he said, but not at home.

The flag in his department was lowered over the weekend to honor a fallen law enforcement officer and for Pearl Harbor Day. But it will go right up Sunday morning, he said.

Would you be shocked if we told you that Sheriff Clark is taking some heat for his stand? We didn’t think so, we weren’t shocked either.

News One For Black America had this to say,

Clark’s actions and those of his supporters prove that White supremacy and privilege—and illusions of American exceptionalism—are alive and well in South Carolina.

Here’s what the Sheriff posted on his Facebook page that brought visions of doom to the race industry.

Now I can understand why someone might disagree with Sheriff Clark’s opinion about flying the flag at half-staff, and I have no issues with that at all. I’m completely mystified as to how anybody can come up with “illusions of American exceptionalism” out of that. And, what the heck is wrong with American exceptionalism?

In addition, where’s the “White supremacy”? I’m willing to bet these folks could find racism and American exceptionalism in a smile and a “good morning”. Clark clarified his opposition to lowering the flag for foreign dignitaries,

Many online pointed to the issue of racism in Clark’s decision, but in interviews, Clark said he would have made the same decision when Pope John Paul II died had he been in the sheriff’s office then, the AP said. Clark has been in office one year.

I hope Sheriff Clark isn’t counting on the endorsement of the NAACP come reelection time.
