Land of the Free? Not so much…

Nanny BloombergToday is one of those days I’m glad I’m old.  I may not going to live to see the complete destruction of the land of the free, a land where individual liberty is the hallmark of the nation and her people.  That shining city on a hill.

Progressives are quickly turning the United States into the Socialist States thanks to policies of the Democratic Party and the seeds for complete destruction of individual liberty are being sewn as I type.

In New York City, Mayor Mike Bloomberg has gotten away with deciding how much salt a chef can use in his recipes.  He knows how big a soda should be.   He knows better than any resident in the city how everyone should live his or her life and he’s making progress (he is a Progressive after all) in putting down the foundation that total government control of your life will sit.

From today’s New York Daily News

Envisioning a future where privacy is a thing of the past, Mayor Bloomberg said Friday it will soon be impossible to escape the watchful eyes of surveillance cameras and even drones in the city.

He acknowledged privacy concerns, but said “you can’t keep the tides from coming in.”

“You wait, in five years, the technology is getting better, they’ll be cameras everyplace . . . whether you like it or not,” Bloomberg said.

New York is following the example in Europe, in London you can’t go anywhere and not be found on a police camera.  Mayor Bloomberg is 100% on Obama’s team, “Let’s Be Like Europe!”

But in the future, the cameras won’t just be planted on buildings and utility poles. Some of them will be able to fly, the mayor pointed out.

… And you know you’re gonna have face recognition software. People are working on that.”

Bloomberg warned that drones would be able to peep into private residences – but that Peeping Tom legislation could help maintain some privacy.

“It’s just we’re going into a different world, unchartered,” he said.

“We’re going to have more visibility and less privacy.

Now I know you’re first thought may well be “Good, if you’re not breaking the law you’ve got nothing to worry about.”

You’re not living in today’s world if you believe that.  Civil liberties are being trounced and trampled on a daily basis and while you may think the Obama administration is heavy handed, don’t forget that the enabling legislation that put boots on the tramplers was written by the Bush administration and passed on a virtually unanimous basis by both Democrats and Republicans.

We live in a nation that overwhelmingly approves of the use of military drones in foreign countries to kill terrorists, including American citizens.  This month we saw a Senate filibuster on the question of whether the Obama administration would follow through on their implied threat to use drones to kill “domestic terrorists” here in the US.  Prominent senators – John McCain and Lindsay Graham for two – accused those concerned about that possibility of being “Wacko Birds.”  Count me as a Wacko Bird.

If you think for one second that politicians would not burn the Constitution to consummate their power, you haven’t been paying attention.  People don’t become politicians to get rich (although most do) or to “serve” they become politicians to acquire power and for no other reason.  That includes your favorite representative.

“The argument against using automation is just this craziness that ‘Oh, it’s Big Brother,’” Bloomberg said. “Get used to it!”

I’d rather not Mayor.  I’d rather not.
